Their children; Martha, Ole, Karoline, Anna, Hans and Hans were born in Norway. (The first Hans died and it was customary to name another child by the same name in Norway, thus two Hans.)
In 1878, John and Sophia and the above children made the trip to America. Sophia was pregnant with Selma on the trip over. They came to and settled in the Evansville area, having heard of the region from relatives already living there. Martha, the oldest child, was 11 and Hans was 1 when they made the trip over.
Upon arriving in the Evansville area they began engaging in
farming.
After Sophia's death John went to the Waubun area and lived with his children; Hans, Selma and Peter.
