Joseph McDonald, the father of the Mercer County PA McDonalds, was born in Ireland around 1764. His wife's name is unknown. There were two different Joseph McDonalds in the records that get mixed up. The one from Mercer County, PA is not the same as Joseph McDonald of Harrison Co., [W]VA, who marred Asa Plummer in 1788 and continued to live in Harrison County until his death, probably between 1811 and 1820. Both Joseph McDonalds were alive in 1810—one in Mercer Co., PA, at the other in Harrison County, [W]VA. The Joseph McDonald of Harrison Co. was not born in Ireland, nor was his wife, Asa (Plummer) McDonald (she was most likely born in VA since the DAR record states that her father Robert Plummer was born in VA).
Joseph McDonald was born in Ireland about 1764. He settled in Pennsylvania and with his wife (name unknown) had the following children:
Mary Ann McDonald, married John Taggart.
Robert McDonald, married Susan Taggart.
Jane McDonald, married William Eastlick.
Joseph McDonald, married Eleanor Bolton.
Margaret McDonald, unmarried.
Sarah McDonald, married Allen Espy.

For now I selected the Mount Pleasant cemetery because that is where his daughter Nancy is buried. This cemetery was once called the Hoagland Cemetery. Joseph appeared in Cool Spring Township in the census records of 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850. He died sometime in the 1850s.
