She taught school in Seadrift, VanHorn, and many West Texas towns.
She never married. We never heard her comment on ever having a boy friend.
She was always the Family Leader, and the Matriarch. She expected to make decisions for people, and they expected her to make the decisions.
She cared for her invalid father, her blind mother, and her older brother, all on a teacher's salary, and all at 734 East 8 1/2 St., in the Heights in Houston. She rented this house for 45 years.
Her father's bad health may have been from gunshot wounds suffered in the deadly gunfight in Bonham. Her mother's cataracts led to complete blindness, probably because there was no money for the surgery.
Willie retired from teaching in 1956. She had taught for 45 years. Her last 30 years had been at Hogg Junior High, and the principal whom she so admired was Mr. Les Center.
She never learned to drive. Always rode the bus.
She is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Houston.
