HASTINGS GAZETTE, May 30, 1891

John McGroarty, the oldest settler of Inver Grove, died at his residence Wednesday morning, at eight o'clock, in the sixty-seventh year of his age. Mr. McGroarty had been a resident of Minnesota since 1853, and christened the village Inver Grove at that time. He was also a prominant politician of Dakota County. He leaves a wife and one son. The funeral was held yesterday.

John McGroarty was born in Inver parish, Ireland, in 1821. Came to America in 1848 and landed at New York, where he purchased a stock of Irish linen and peddled from that city to Minnesota, which occupied his time until 1853. During the spring of that year he arrived at St. Paul, and in August came to Inver Grove, making a claim of one hundred and sixty acres, on which he has since lived. He is is the oldest living settler in the township on which He bestowed the name of Inver, in honor of his native place. In 1844, in Ireland, he married Miss Bridget MeNellis, by whom he had one son, Barnard. He is working his father's farm in partnership; was married in 1879 to Miss Ellen Dalton, a native of this state; John is their only son.

John McGroarty (1824 - 1891) was born in the Parish of Inver, Town of Kellogs near Inver Bridge, County Donegal, Ireland. John named Inver Grove (Both the township and Village, - a suburb of St. Paul) in Dakota County, Minnesota, after Inver Parish in Ireland, on account of the similarity in both landscapes. John had only one child, a son Bryan. Bryan was born in Inver Parish, Ireland in 1845, came to Minnesota [in 1853] when he was six or eight years old with his parents, settling in Inver Grove. He died May 5, 1934. He was buried in the Inver Grove Cemetery [St. Patrick Cemetery], - a tract of twenty-two acres which John gave in early days to the Archdiocese of St. Paul. Captain William B. McGroarty and his brother John McGroarty also gave a section of land to the Archdiocese of St. Paul, where today the grounds are graced by the beautiful buildings of St. Thomas College, and Saint Paul Seminary.
