Irving Althaus, longtime Peninsula resident and businessman, died on July 14th at the age of 89. Irving was born in Ciechanow, Poland, and emigrated to the United States in 1949. A proud survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Irving became an American citizen in 1954. He was manager of Althaus Delicatessen & Caterers in Newport News for 46 years, working with his cousin, the late Samuel Althaus, until their retirement in 1997. An avid reader of history and biography, Irving was a participant in Holocaust survivor history documentation projects. He loved gatherings of friends and family, good food, practical jokes, and TV news.
