Benjamin McCulloch was born in Halifax County N.C. to Alexander McCulloch and Sarah Hill McCulloch in 1737. McCulloch served in the N.C. Senate from Halifax County in the years 1783, 1786, and in the House of Commons in 1781, 1782, and 1784. Halifax County was known for its devotion to liberty, and the patriotism of its sons. McCulloch was present on Dec. 21st of 1774 for a meeting of the Committee of Safety with chairman, William Jones presiding according to state records and he was sent to the Committee of Safety convention in Newbern as a delegate in 1775. (These are from historical sketches of N.C. from 1584 to 1851 by Col. John H. Wheeler) McCulloch also served on the Constitution committee of the State of North Carolina when they met at Halifax on the 12th of November 1776. McCulloch married Sarah Stokes, daughter of David Stokes and Sarah Montford Stokes in 1758. He is the grandfather of Civil War Generals Benjamin and Henry Eustace McCulloch who also served as Texas Rangers and U.S. Marshalls. He passed away in Edenton, N.C. and was buried there in 1809
