Robert was the son of William Cole and Hannah [Whitaker?]. After William died, Hannah Cole married John Combs of Oglethorpe County, Georgia.


It is believed that Robert Cole's family moved to Georgia from Surry County, North Carolina with his grandfather, John Cole. They were in Georgia before 1784. He would have been about 6 years of age at the time.


Robert married Elizabeth Fambrough in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia when he was about 19 years old. He bought his first farm in what is now Newton County, Georgia. The farm was 202.5 acres and was purchased from Prettyman Knowles who had won the tract in the 1807 Georgia Land Lottery. Robert established a large Grist Mill on Bear Creek and purchased additional land in the area.
