Charles E. Borland of Lewiston, after a long illness, went to meet his heavenly Father Thursday morning, Feb. 19, 2004.

Charles was born June 5, 1933, in Hodge, La., to Bessie May Borland and Joseph Morris Borland. He attended school there until the age of 17 when he moved to Yakima to work on a fruit farm.

He joined the Merchant Marines in 1952 and worked as an oiler and studied diesel mechanics. Charles moved his parents and family to Tieton, Wash., near Yakima, in 1953.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. He was stationed in several locations and served a tour of duty in West Germany before spending two years in Washington.

He moved to Lewiston in 1957 where he met and married Barbara Snyder. They had eight children before divorcing in 1973.

He then met the love of his life, Beverly Kernan, with whom he married and spent the rest of his life. Charles was employed at several different automobile dealerships. He also owned Chuck's Auto Sales in both Hermiston, Ore., and Lewiston.

Charles counted his customers as friends and would have liked to thank you all for letting him spend so many years doing something he loved so much.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his children, sons Rick of Yakima and Dan of Clarkston, daughters Lori Stout, Brenda Reed, and Stacy Gaucher, all of Clarkston, Debby Borland and Julie Taulbee, both of Lewiston, and Lisa Martin of Pocatello; stepdaughter Debby Wilson and stepson Jim Kernan, both of Lewiston; brothers Marshall, Jim and Harold; and sisters Stacy Taylor, Elsie Higginbotham, Ruth Slocum, Judy Crabb, and Mary Robinson. He also is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Upon his request, cremation has taken place.
