Hazel was the daughter of William Francis Marion Burns and "Vitt" Adkins Burns. She was raised on what is now called Trace Fork off Big Laurel Road at Sias, WV. She married John Shanholtz on June 25, 1929 and they had three children: Don Wesley, Dorothy Marie Shanholtz Black and Betty Lou Shanholtz Adkins. Hazel and John lived in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio; and in Lincoln County West Virginia, they lived in Myra, Hamlin and New Hamlin.
