Rosa Mikels, 87, Former Teacher, Dies
Mrs. Rosa Mary Redding Mikels, 87, retired school teacher and a member of an early prominent New Castle family, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ailsie Mikels Heineman, in Albany, NY. (Her birth year was approximated.)
Mrs. Mikels was widely known among the older graduates of the New Castle High School having served as principal of the school from 1891 to 1910 and in 1910 serving as superintendent of schools to fill the unexpired term of J. C. Weir, who died while serving in that capacity.
Her father was Thomas B. Redding (1831-1895) member of a pioneer New Castle family who achieved distinction as a scholar, an educator, an attorney and for a brief period was an editor of The New Castle Courier.
Mrs. Mikels was born July 28, 1862. Her husband was Charles Mikels, who preceded her in death many years ago. She graduated from the New Castle High School in the class of 1879 which contained 4 members.
After leaving the New Castle schools, Mrs. Mikels taught for a number of years in Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and for the past several years has resided with her daughter in Albany, NY.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Brasure Funeral Home in Albany and burial will be in the Memory's Garden, near Albany.
*Rosa married Charles N. Mikels June 24, 1886 in Henry Co., IN. She was the daughter of Thomas B. Redding and Sarah W. Corrington and had two sisters: Alice Gray and Ailsie Redding. Rosa and Charles had one daughter, the above mentioned Ailsie Hester Mikels who married Paul Gustav Heineman on June 24, 1911 in Marion Co., IN.
