Cletus Ralph Bergthold was born October 2, 1924 in West Point, Iowa a son of Henry and Anna Bergthold. He graduated from Marquette High School and went on to graduate from St. Ambrose, class of 51. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Spiekermeier on August 13, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point. Cletus proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII in England, Germany and France under Gen. Eisenhower (SHAEF). He maintained many friendships, lasting his entire life by attending Army reunions yearly. He was very thankful for the opportunity to attend an Honor Flight in 2009. After the service Cletus went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal retiring in 1987 as a Management Analyst after 38 years of service.
Cletus enjoyed wood working, gardening and socializing with neighbors; but his greatest priority and joy came from helping his children, no matter the project he was always there to help. He had beautiful penmanship, which he attributed to his interest in calligraphy.
Memorials are suggested to either Clarrissa C. Cook Hospice House or the St. Ambrose Alumni Association.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of over 68 years, Jeanette, children and their spouses, Joyce and Lloyd Kerr, Blue Grass, Dennis and April Bergthold, Davenport, Judy and Bill Shipley, Blue Grass, Janet Edwards, and Joann and Mike Vinzenz all of Davenport, David and Cindy Bergthold, Bennett, IA, Jackie and Jerry Stoltenberg, Maysville, Julie and Mark Bradshaw, Chandler, AZ, Danny and Sarah Bergthold, Davenport; a special niece, Tina (Dave) Sims, Taylor Ridge; 24 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and extended family.
