Vincent Bergthold Sr.

DAVENPORT - Vincent L. Bergthold Sr., 79, of Davenport, died Tuesday at Genesis Medical center-East Campus, Davenport, after an extended illness.


Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Bergthold was employed by Henry Wurzer of the Kahl Building and worked at various downtown buildings as a carpenter superintendent. He completed his carpenter apprenticeship in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he built homes before moving to Davenport in 1951. He recently received his 45-year pin from Carpenters Local 4.

He married Martha Gilbert in 1941 in Corpus Christi.

He attended seminary at St. Viator Seminary, Lemont, Ill., was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps three years and served with the Army in World War II.

Mr. Bergthold enjoyed scouting, hiking, bingo, reading and will be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make people laugh.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Chalah Ellis, Salem, Ore.; sons, Vincent Jr., Plainfield, Ill.; Richard, Battle Creek, Mich.; Jerry, Richmond, Va.; and Thomas, Plainfield, Ill.; brothers, Jerome and the Rev. Leroy, both of Davenport; Lawrence, West Point, Iowa; Joseph, Chicago; and Cletus, Blue Grass, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bergthold was preceded in death by a son, Paul, and a granddaughter, Juli.
