Daniel Koppes was one of seven children of Michael Koppes and Anna Maria Schuh. He was born at Greiveldange in the Moselle River Valley on October 16, 1798.
Anna Kieffer was a daughter of Johannes Kieffer and Margaretha Zeimet. According to Luxembourg census reports, she was born November 12, 1808, at Gostingen in the Moselle River Valley.
Daniel and Anna were married at Greiveldange on February 3, 1831. The couple had three children, all born in the village: Johannes, Elisabeth Koppes (who married Nicholas Traufler), and Susanna.
According to the record, Daniel was a taglöhner – a day laborer. His son Johannes was born July 22, 1832. Elisabeth came next, arriving May 30, 1835, and Susanna rounded out the family when she was delivered October 6, 1837. Sadly, Daniel died before his son turned ten, succumbing at age 41 at Greiveldange on January 18, 1840. After his death, his widow and her three children remained in the village, until they left Luxembourg for America in 1854.
