Had Been Confined to Home Since Early in May – A Leading Farmer
PROVIDENCE, Sept. 15 – John O. Herring, age 59, one of the leading farmers of Johnson county and well-known citizen, died at his home near here Monday night at 10:50 after an illness that had confined him to his home since early in May. During his long illness Mr. Herring had been taken to the St. Vincent hospital in Indianapolis for observation and treatment but his condition did not improve and he was brought back home. His condition for several weeks had been regarded as critical…..Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery at Franklin.
Mr. Herring was born in Jefferson county near Madison, January 12, 1872 and he would have been sixty years of age on his next birthday. He was the son of James and Hannah Herring, members of leading families of Jefferson county. His father was a farmer and Mr. Herring took up farming at an early age and followed that calling during his life and had been very successful.
He was united in marriage in March 1896 to Miss Nellie Dailey, a young woman of his home community and a sister of Mrs. Samuel George of Franklin. Soon after their marriage they came to Johnson county where for a short time Mr. Herring worked for his brother-in-law, the late Samuel M. George, and for the past thirty-two years the firm of George & Herring had been one of the most extensive farming partnerships in Johnson county.
FARMED 440 ACRES----
In addition to operating the George farm of 340 acres in Union township, Mr. Herring farmed his own land adjoining it and for a number of years managed 440 acres of some of the best farm land in the county. They were also engaged in livestock raising and had been successful in both lines.
The three sons of Mr. Herring, all of whom with the widow survive, are Chandis and Russell, who lived at home with their parents, and George Herring who is married and lives on a farm near the home of his father and mother.
Mr. Herring is also survived by three brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Jefferson and Samuel Herring of near Madison and James P. Herring of the Hopewell community. The sisters are Mrs. Kate Benefield of North Vernon, and Mrs. George VanAntwerp and Mrs. Walter Mitchell of Johnson county. Two sisters preceded their brother in death. They were Miss Bettie Herring of Jefferson county and Mrs. John Wheeler whose death occurred in Franklin several years ago.
Mr. Herring was a member of the Providence Christian church and of the Providence lodge of Masons and belonged to the Franklin Modern Woodmen Camp.
