Shortly after the marriage of her sister Mary to Richard Tonkin in 1864 she returned to James's birth place, Norfolk England where they had all of their 9 children.
In 1883 the decided to return to Australia, choosing to settle in NSW. Only 4 weeks after their arrival, James died, leaving Alice to support her family by doing needlework & becoming the local midwife.
