Suggested edit: Alexander A. Cantrell died of disease in camp hospital at Blue Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier County, WV. Records conflict on date of death between 25 to 27 Sep 1861. The records also have alternate name spellings: Cantrell, Cantrail, Contrail.

for you information: The Confederates set up a camp at Blue Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier County WV in the summer of 1861 to be prepared for Union intrusion from northern West Virginia into southern West Virginia. They suffered there from lack of supplies, and being remote did not help matters. However, a small hospital was erected to care for troops from VA, NC, and GA. But a cold wet fall and winter came, and with malnutirtion and poor living conditions, about 90 soldiers died of disease (pneumonia, typhoid, tuberculosis). Alexander A. Cantrelll was among them. The deceased were buried in unmarked graves on a hill over looking the Blue Sulphur Springs community. However by Jan 1862, it was obvious the advancing Union forces were superior and the supply situation remained abysmal, so the Confederates retreated to Lewisburg, Greenbrier County WV. Union forces then occupied Blue Sulphur Springs. May 1863, the Confederates suffered a defeat at Lewisburg after a 45 minute battle, and retreated to White Sulphur Springs. And that too fell to Union hands. The only interest in the area strategically was Union forces occupying a railroad that could be used to transport supplies and troops back and forth between the eastern and western fronts of the Civil War.
