August Cheeney, 74, of Ely, Minn., died Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital.

He was born on September 11, 1930 to Wilfred and Theresa (Guimond) Cheeney in Bottineau, ND.

Gus graduated from North Branch High School, class of 1954.

He married Anna (Poegel) Calkins on Aug. 4, 1969. In 1972 the couple moved to Isabella and purchased Chub Lake Resort. In 1975 they moved to Ely.

The couple were foster parents for 10 years having cared for 34 foster children.

Gus worked for the city of Ely for 20 1/2 years, retiring in 1996. During this time he was a firefighter, police dispatcher, and worked city maintenance. He was a member of the Ely Moose Lodge and Winton Community Fellowship Church.

Gus enjoyed fishing, camping, tilling gardens, handyman work and especially spending time with his grandchildren and Alan.

He is survived by his wife: Anna, children: Linda (Alan) Mosher, Joann Calkins, Cindy Calkins (Chas Johnson), Kerry (Harlen) Lee, Mark, Linda Cheeney, Brad, Minn., Amy (Chris) Schally and Troy; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, three brothers: David (Virginia), Robert and Wil; three sisters: Rose (Len) Montfort, Lorna Schad and Elaine (Jerry); and special nephew: Ben (Julie) Karnes and many other loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Jody Lynn.

Burial was in the Ely Cemetery.
