Leonard was working as a manager for a chain drug store at the time and his wife Eva was a self-employed saleslady in the clothing industry.

His son Leonard Jr. died in 1993; here is his obituary:

Former Kansas City Municipal Court Judge Leonard S. Hughes Jr., 66, central Kansas City, died Jan. 13, 1993, in Kansas City. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Risen Christ Catholic Church; graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence A. Jones Linwood Chapel, where Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the United Negro College Fund.

Judge Hughes was a Kansas City municipal judge from 1977 until he retired in 1986. He had practiced law privately since 1987 and also practiced privately from the mid-1960s to 1974. He was Jackson County magistrate from 1974 to 1977, was an assistant Jackson county counselor from 1962 until the mid-1960s and was an assistant Jackson County prosecutor in 1961-62. He was a candidate for Jackson County prosecutor in 1988.

He was a co-founder of Freedom Inc. He was a member of the Missouri, Jackson County and Greater Kansas City bar associations and was a former member of the National Bar Association judicial council..

He received a bachelor's degree and law degree from Washburn University of Topeka in 1953 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Earlier he attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn. He was a member of the I.B. Blackburn Masonic Lodge. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a lifelong Kansas City resident. Survivors include his wife, Michal S. Hughes of the home; four sons, Jackson County Circuit Judge Leonard S. Hughes III and Stefan C. Hughes of Kansas City and Dr. Kevin S. Hughes and P. Shawn Hughes of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Amy E. Hughes , a stepson, Brian K. Johnson, and his mother, Eva M. Hughes , all of Kansas City; two brothers, his twin, Edward R. Hughes , San Jose, Calif., and Mickle D. Hughes , Kansas City; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Eva May Hughes passed away November 29, 2001. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001, at Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel, where friends may call after 9 a.m.; interment in Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery, Ft. Leavenworth, KS.

Mrs. Hughes was born November 6, 1899, in Topeka, KS, and had lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. She married Leonard S. Hughes Sr. in the Kansas City area; four sons were born to this union: Judge Leonard S. Hughes Jr., Edward E. Hughes and Eugene "Skippy" Hughes, who all have preceded her in death, and Mickle D. Hughes of the city.

Mrs. Hughes was a proud businesswoman and was very generous. She owned and operated Eva's Wardrobe Exchange, beginning at 18th & Lydia. In later years, the retail clothing shop became known as Eva's Smart Shop and was operated from her home. Mrs. Hughes was known to have dresses available for women attending formal events or college, showing support for their endeavors. She was known for her Annual Christmas Sale and the Fourth of July Celebration at Lake Placid, MO. Mrs. Hughes was the oldest member of the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. She served as president of the Wheatley Hospital Building Fund, and was a member of the Sunday Evening Poker Club and the 13 Club.

She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a nephew, Roy Woodruff, two great-nieces, two greatnephews, and other relatives and friends. (Arrangements: Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel)
