Obituary: BOUNTIFUL -- Nora Holbrook Stringham, age 86, passed away August 13, 2000 in Bountiful, Utah from causes incident to age. Nora was born on April 19, 1914 in Syracuse, Utah to Joseph and Rubie Hazel Ellis Holbrook, the fourth of six children. In her youth she was active in the 4H Club and at age 16 she won the Style Dress Review and a trip to the Chicago Worlds Fair with 4H girls from throughout the nation. She attended the Utah State Agricultural College and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega . On August 17, 1939 she married Howard Barlow Stringham. They lived in Bountiful all their lives, while raising two boys. Nora stressed education to her children. She served in the PTA and urged her boys to get college degrees that health had denied her. She worked as a telephone operator from 1948 to 1976 when she retired from AT&T. She was a professional seamstress, specializing in wedding dresses; she was a sewing sweepstakes winner at the state fair and a sweeps takes winner in home canning. In 1956 she won the title of "Mrs Downtown Salt Lake City." In 1973 she was diagnosed with cancer. She recovered through experimental chemotherapy and radiation treatments that left her with marked health limitations. In retirement Nora was active in the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. She served as treasurer for the local chapter of the AARP. She was active with Howard in the Bountiful Golden Years Senior Citizens Center. He preceded her in death in 1997. Survived by her two sons: Gregory Howard Stringham and Joseph Gerrard Stringham both of Bountiful; two grandchildren: Suzette Stringham Wilson of Syracuse and Joseph Phillip Stringham of Layton; and five darling great-grandchildren. We will miss her. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Thursday, August 17, 2000 at the Bountiful 5th Ward Chapel, 10th North and 100 West in Bountiful. Friends may call from 6-8 pm at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and again Thursday morning from 9:45-10:45 am at the church. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery."
