He was born June 12, 1947, in Capitan and had lived there all his life. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He worked at Ft. Stanton for 25 years and loved to hunt, and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He married Bertha Verdugo on Nov. 18, 1972, in Carrizozo.
Surviving family members include his wife, Bertha, of Capitan; two sons, Robert Griego Jr. and his wife, Tammi, of Magdalena and David Griego, who attends New Mexico Tech in Socorro; a brother, Larry Griego of Alamogordo; three sisters, Chris Martel and her husband Delore of Alamogordo, Cecila Griego of Redding, Calif., Viola Fairbanks and her husband Calvin of Maryland; two grandsons, Caleb and Cade Griego, and a granddaughter, Jazmine Lopez.
