Mary was born in Carmel, Indiana on September 20, 1910, the daughter of Jesse R. and Bertha (Kemp) Johnson.
She graduated from Carmel High School. Mary was a graduate of the Indiana University School of Nursing and from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in science. Later she graduated from Ball State Teachers College with a master's degree in counseling. A portion of her graduate work was done at the University of Chicago.
Mary held various positions in the Indiana University Hospital and the Indiana University School of Nursing. After coming to Muncie in 1946, she served as the Director of Nursing Services at Ball Memorial Hospital. She then organized and became the first director of the Practical Nursing School at the hospital. She next became the Director of the Nursing School at Ball Memorial Hospital. In 1967 she became a professor at Ball State University in the Department of Nursing and continued there until her retirement in 1973.
Mrs. Kimmel was a member of Friends Memorial Church, Altrusa Club, Yorktown Women's Club, Delaware Chapter of the Travel Study Group, American Nursing Association, R.S.V.P. and served as a volunteer for the Muncie Cultural Center.
She is survived by two nephews, Robert Myers (Glenda) of Houston, Texas, and, Jerry Myers (Kay) of Carmel, Indiana and each of their respective families, including seven grand nieces and nephews, sixteen great grand nieces and nephews, and two great- great grand nieces
She was preceded in death by her husband, D. John Kimmel in 1988; a sister, Lucille Myers; and her parents.
Services will be 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Mausoleum.
Family and friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the mortuary.
