Born in Riedlingen, Germany, the son of Jakob Keppeler, a clocktower mechanic and innkeeper in Riedlingen, and Antonie Pfeiffer.

He was first of his family to immigrate to the US around 1853 after the death of his father, and first lived in Baton Rouge, LA, where he likely met his wife Ann Fields. He began a music school in Louisiana, but soon settled in Galveston, TX and grew the business with his wife there, going by "Professor William Keppler."

William's younger brother Anton Keppeler was his next sibling to immigrate to the US, first settling in New Haven, CT in 1881, and then finally to Butte, Montana in 1892.

The last of the Keppeler siblings to immigrate was William's younger sister Josephine (Keppeler) Baier, who also immigrated and settled in New Haven, CT in 1883.
