Dr. Robert L. Mills, 89, of Lexington, formerly of Owenton died Jan. 16, 2006, at Central Baptist Hospital.
A native of Erlanger, he was the son of the late John Clifford and Dixie Lee Morris Mills, and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Owenton. He received a B.A., M.A. and Ed.D. from the University of Kentucky and served as the university's dean of admissions and registrar from 1954-57, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1963. He served as chairman in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas, Austin, before being called as president of Georgetown College from 1959-1978. Dr. Mills was in "Who's Who in America" and in 1971, received a LLD honorary degree from William Jewell College.
He is survived by his wife of 63-1โ2 years, Mildred "Millie" Sizer Mills; three children and their spouses, Robert Lee and Margaret Mills Jr. of Cincinnati, Dixie Louise Mills of Bloomington, Ill., and Dale and Barbara Mills Harrell of Bradenton, Fla.; and three grandsons, Robert L. Mills III and Steven P. and Michael S. Harrell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Mills Venn Dempsey.
Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at the John L. Hill Chapel at Georgetown College by Dr. Thomas E. Corts and the Rev. Daven Watkins. Burial was in Georgetown Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Robert L. Mills III, Steven P. and Michael S. Harrell, Danny Tilford, Raymond Morrison, Hubert Beck, Vernon Musselman, Ken Hanson, Dave Stowe, Virgil Cobb, Robin Oldham, Paul Beasley, Horace T. Hambrick and Frank Penn.
