This is a cenotaph (allowed on findagrave when burial location is unknown but some other memorial physically exists).

The monument stone located in this cemetery memorializes Joseph Horst (1723-1804) and his family who came over to America on the ship Britannia. They arrived on September 21 1731. Their name was spelled Horsh on the passenger list. Joseph's mother was Barbara Horst- whose husband died on the ship between Rotterdam and Philadelphia. Barbara and her other sons Michael (1713-1772) and Peter (1729-1795) lived out their lives in Pennsylvania.

Barbara was a courageous and important settler whose true genealogy is still unresolved.

NOTE-Looking for any documentation concerning her maiden name. No one in Lancaster or Lebanon Counties ever knew her maiden name for over 250 years. The first reference to Barbara's maiden name was online in the late 1990's. An individual database on The Swiss Anabaptist Genealogical Association database (SAGA- now a subscription database) included Barbara's maiden name as Schenk and listed a misread article about the Groff-Horst family from Mennonite Heritage Magazine as the source. This apparently led to her name being declared Barbara Schenk on every family tree created since then. Unfortunately, the cited article clearly states that her maiden name has always been unknown. In fact, at the top of one page was her great-great grandson Joseph Horst who married a Barbara Schenk. Because most descendants believe Barbara's husband may have been named Joseph, someone hastily made note of this incorrectly interpreted information and submitted the contrived parentage. Author Richard Davis supplied possible parents for a Barbara Schenk born around the appropriate time, and people began using this information without any verification whatsoever. Hundreds of online family trees suddenly linked up to a Barbara Schenk born circa 1690 (daughter of Hans Schenk & Mary Meyer) without any record of a marriage in Europe or any evidence in this country that she was ever named Barbara Schenk or even Barbara S. Horst. None of her children's birth records have been found either.
