Richard was born in Skowhegan, Maine October 18, 1933, the son of Frederick James Sterns and Sarah Hoos Sterns. For most of his life he was an active member of his home community. He attended the Skowhegan public schools (SAHS Class of '51) and was a letterman in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was also an accomplished pianist. Upon completing Army Service, he returned to Skowhegan to become an executive for Sterns Department Store and later the Knot Hole Ski Shop. While an executive with Sterns he attended the University of Maine in Portland and received his Law degree. He was a distinguished member of the local Rotary, an avid gardener, a voracious reader, and a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was an honorary coach of the Winslow Black Raiders for the past 3 years with his grandson Jesse. Dick loved and appreciated good food and looked forward to Sunday night dinners with Florence and their extended family at their home in Skowhegan.
