Master Sgt., retired, U.S. Air Force, John Robert Kerr, was born in Lafayette, Ind., on June 4, 1939, and passed away in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., at the age of 75, on June 24, 2014. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette. He retired from the United States military after 20 years of service, in which he served with the 1st Air Commando Squadron at Hurlburt Airfield. During this time he served in Vietnam and traveled to Germany for four years, Thailand for three years and England for two years. Mr. Kerr loved life and gave countless hours to supporting elderly friends. He was an avid photographer and aviation historian.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary Virginia Mackey Kerr and John Lewis Kerr; and sister, Elizabeth Rose Kerr Bunch.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Flora Myra Nell Smith Kerr; son, Paul Alan Kerr and wife Cynthia Jayne of Dallas, Texas; sister, Judith Ann Kerr of Lafayette; brother, Thomas Lynn Kerr of Del Rio, Texas; and uncle, Jack Kerr; aunt, Nadine Sanford; and aunt Geraldine Moyer.
There will be a Celebration of Life, 9:30 a.m., on Monday, June 30, 2014, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E., Fort Walton Beach, FL. Inurnment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., with full military honors with time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to Veterans Tower Memorial, www.veteranstower.com; or P.O. Box 67, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32549.
