Roland entered The Trappist Order shortly after the war at Valley Falls, Rhode Island. Monastery was destroyed by a fire and the Monks rebuilt in Spencer, Ma. In the fall of 1957 he left Spencer to build a new monastery in Azul, Argentina. Trappist monk for 21 years.

Brother Roland Patrick Gendreau, O.C.S.O., 57, a Trappist monk stationed at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Azul, Argentina, died of a brain tumor Saturday at the Mater Dei Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina. A Chicopee native, he was the brother of Bernadette Biela of Holyoke.

He was born in Chicopee, the son of the late Hubert and Blanche Gendreau and was a graduate of the St. Joan of Arc School, Aldenville, and the former St. Jerome High School. A veteran of World War II, he served for three years in the European theater as a member of the Army Medical Corps. After the war he was employed at Savage Arms, Chicopee.

He entered the Trappist Order at Our Lady of the Valley in Valley Falls, R. I., June 1949 and made his solemn profession at St. Joseph's Abbey, Spencer.

In 1958 he left St. Joseph's Abbey with a group of monks to establish a new foundation in Azul, Argentina, which was later named Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles. He last returned to this area to visit relatives in 1976.

Besides his sister, he leaves three brothers, Roger of Pittsfield, William of E. Hartford, Conn., and Leon of Palos Verdes, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral and burial were held at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, Azul, Argentina.
