He was the son of Philip Harold and Alma Valma Koontz. Born on his parents farm, north of Mt. Gilead. He attended the one-room Smith Grove School and graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1948, and began farming with his father.
On Jan. 2, 1951, he began service in the Air Force, and he served three years during the Korean Conflict. Attaining the rank of sergeant.
On Dec. 30, 1951, he and Norma B. Cripe were married.
