Rev. Bernard W. Fortune
The Rev. Fortune passed away on Sunday (July 6, 2008) at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center following a brief illness.
Surviving is his wife Norma Lucile Fortune, five sons Gregory Fortune and his wife Denise of Slidell, LA, David W. Fortune of Ogdensburg, Stephen R. Fortune and his fiancee’ Bridget Koban of Ogdensburg, Daniel J. Fortune of Baltimore, MD, Douglas W. Fortune of Ogdensburg and his fianceé Jennifer Barr; two daughters Jo Jeanne Belser and her spouse Lenore Funkhouser of Alexandria, VA and Deborah J. Fortune of Ogdensburg; six grandchildren Greg Fortune Jr., Joshua Fortune, Jennifer Fortune, Zeb Fortune, Seth Fortune and Rheanne Fortune.
Two brothers, Duane & Francis Fortune predeceased him.
The Rev. Fortune was born on June 10, 1929 in Glens Falls, NY, a son of the late Halsey and Myrtle (Palmer) Fortune. He graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1947 and continued his education at Marion College in Marion, Indiana. On June 2, 1951 he married Norma Lucile Smith at the 8th Street Church in Marion, Indiana. The couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in June.
The Rev. Fortune was a Wesleyan minister for 56 years, first starting his career in Brookdale, NY where he served as Pastor of the Brookdale Wesleyan Church from 1955 – 1963 and also held part-time employment with the Potsdam Montgomery Ward Store. In 1963 he and his family moved to Hague, NY, where his ministry continued, becoming the Pastor of the Hague Wesleyan Church and an active volunteer with the Hague Fire and Rescue. In 1972 The Rev. Fortune began his long career as Pastor of the Ogdensburg Wesleyan Church, where he served until 1994. The Rev. Fortune returned to college at Canton ATC in 1977 to obtain a degree in Mortuary Science and began his employment at the Fox Funeral Home in Ogdensburg where he worked until 1999.

The Rev. Fortune was active with both the Ogdensburg Library and North Country Library System in Watertown, where he served on the Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1998 and again from 2001 to present. For fifteen years he officiated at weekly services at the United Helpers Nursing Home. He also was a member of the Lisbon Campground Association, and his love of ministry enabled him to continue as an interim pastor at both the Morley and Colton Wesleyan Churches in his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, collecting coins, and spending many hours on geneology and necrology information.
