BLUE MOUNTAIN – Melvin Dean Garrett died Monday, June 23, 2014, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. He was born on September 10, 1938, to Thomas and Fannie Mable Garrett in Baldwyn. He was a retired business owner and truck driver for CCC. He was a veteran of the Mississippi Army National Guard. Mel was a longtime member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Most importantly, he was the best husband, dad,and papaw we could ask for. He spent most of his days working around his garage and keeping his yard in top condition. Mel would rather spend all of his days on the front porch with his precious wife of 57 years, Nell. His family was his top priority. He worked all his life for his family. He loved them with his whole heart.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Nell Garrett, Blue Mountain; his children, Penny Holcomb (Mike) and Debbie Davis (Jimmy Wayne), both of Ripley, Kim Tyra (Mike), Russellville, Ala., Tom Garrett (Melissa), New Albany; 13 grandchildren, Cheryl Hodges, Jessie and Chad Holcomb, Kayla Odom, Shelby and Katie Davis, Dean and Darcy Garrett, Anna, Abby and Allison Burks, Matthew and Seth Tyra. Bud was a proud great-grandpa of 10, Drew, Jacob, and Hannah Hodges, Benjamin, Briley and Presely Holcomb, Hayden, Evan, Maddox and Braxton Holcomb and Nolan Odom.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother, Euel Bryant; and a half sister, Avonell Hankins.

Pallbearers are Mike Holcomb, Rob Hodges, Mike Tyra, Jimmy Wayne Davis, Erik Odom and Sidney Burks.
Honorary pallbearers are the men of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Service will be Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church and burial will be in Fellowship Cemetery. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements.
