Donald E. Payne 76, of Lafayette, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Home Hospital. Born March 3, 1929, to the late Irwin and Edna Reed Payne in Frankfort, he had resided in Lafayette since the late 1960s.

He was a tank driver in the Army during the Korean War. His marriage was to Eleanor J. Wright on April 7, 1953, in Frankfort, and she preceded him in death on June 6, 1997.

Mr. Payne drove a city bus and was employed by the Tippecanoe Highway Department from 1971 to 1982. For 12 years he worked as caretaker for the Tippecanoe County Fairground, retiring in 1994. He went back to driving a city bus after retirement. He enjoyed his family and having coffee with buddies.

Surviving are a son, Steven E. Payne (wife-Carla) of Lafayette; a daughter, Donna J. Rayburn of Frankfort; five sisters, Maxine Pence of Greencastle, Inez Pence and Emmaline Staley, both of Frankfort, Charlene Birden of Michigantown, and Helen Ray (husband-John) of Lafayette; two brothers, Irwin Payne (wife-Betty) of Ocala, FL, and William Payne of Lafayette; a niece, Joan Pence, who was his caretaker; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas and David Payne; and two daughters, Melanie and Rebecca Jane Payne.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home with service there 9 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Beech Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
