SALEM - Capital Manor resident Gerald W. Morlan of Salem, Oregon passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Betty Ediger Morlan, a daughter Kareen M. Gerald was born in Albany, Oregon and enjoyed a lifetime passion for farming. He expanded his row crop farming career in the Independence area after the hop production decline in the early 1950's. An early innovator of farm equipment, he was a leader in mechanization of many aspects, for the production of strawberries, pole beans, corn and carrots. Gerald and Betty employed hundreds of local and seasonal workers in the strawberry and bean fields and are fondly remembered by many for giving them their first on the job training. Gerald served on the Board of Blue Lake Packers cannery and also as a Governor appointee to the Strawberry Council.

In other activities and interests he was a long time member and active in the Independence First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendant, Trustee and Deacon. A strong supporter in the early development of parks and recreation he served many years on the Polk County and State Park Board.
