William John Brown, always called John, is the son of William and Thirza Moore Brown. He was born in Perry County, Ohio and moved with his parents and siblings to Logan County, Illinois sometime between 1840-1842. His father William was killed in Logan County by a falling tree in 1842. His mother Thirza moved her younger children to Scott County (even probating her husband's estate in Scott County) to be near her father John Moore and her siblings.

John Brown married Margaret Jane Ray on November 21, 1856 in Scott County. He served with Co. G of the 91st IL Infantry during the Civil War. When he returned to Scott County he was a blacksmith. He died in the Jacksonville State Hospital.
