Death Of Mrs. N. J. Walker.
Onaga's Oldest Resident Passes On Quietly At Her Home.
Mrs. N. J. Walker passed away quietly at her home last Friday morning. She would have reached the age of 98 years in a few more days, and was Onaga's oldest citizen.
Nancy Jane Marine was born June 19, 1841 in Indiana. She died in Onaga June 2, 1939, aged 97 years, 11 mos., and 17 days. She was married to Adam Ranklin Walker June 25, 1863 in Salem, Illinois. They moved to Kansas in 1867 and took a homestead in Pottawatomie County, north of Louisville. She is survived by her four children: George G. Walker, of Mayfield, Okla.; Mrs. Ella M. Grover, of Iola Kans.; Mrs. Clara Clark, of Manhattan, Kans., and Mrs. Florence Jones of Onaga, Kans. 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She also has one step-daughter, Mrs. J. O. Benton. Mr. Walker passed away in 1907.
Mrs. Walker, as a young girl, had the unusual privilege of seeing Abraham Lincoln, and hearing him speak. She also had the unusual experience in that she lived in the apartment house, at the time, where Williams Jennings Bryan was born. Mrs. Walker saw the devasting time of the grasshoppers in Kansas, the prairie fires and at times, the threat and fear of the Indians.
In addition to rearing her family, she found time to engage in millinery work, and sewing for the neighbor women, and wherever the sick were, Mrs. Walker was always ready and willing to give aid and comfort.
All her life, she was actively engaged in church work, until age and ill health prevented. In addition to all the relatives she leaves to mourn her loss, are many friends who love and cherish her memory.
Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Thomas C. Hinkle at the Congregational church, Sunday afternoon. Burial was at Onaga cemetery.
