Ayers, officiating. The members of the G. A. R. of this city turned out in a body, and while they surrounded the casket which held the remains of their comrade, held a very impressive ritualistic service at the close of the sermon, closing by wrapping the casket in the flag which he had loved so well.
The deceased was born near Orleans, Indiana, on February 23rd, 1829, and was 78 years, 11 months and 7 days old at the time of his death.
He was married to N. J. Merine, at Salem, Illinois, in 1863, and four children were the issue of this marriage. Mrs. Ella Grover of Delia, Mrs. W. S. Clark and Mrs. Florence Jones of Emmett, and G. G. Walker of Prentiss, Okla. The late Mrs. J. O. Benton was a daughter by a former marriage.
The deceased was an old soldier and served in the war of the Rebellion. He enlisted in the 66th Indiana Vol., and after a year's service was discharged at Corinth, Miss., and account of sickness. He was a member of the G. A. R. Post of Grenola, Kansas where he resided for three years, and was formerly a member of the Onaga Post.
He removed from Illinois to Kansas in 1867 and settled on a farm in Vienna township where the greater part of his life was spent. Later he was engaged in the boot and shoe business in this city, and in Grenola. He was a kind, unassuming man and his acquaintances. He joined the Presbyterian church while living in Illinois, and after coming to Kansas, he became a member of the Christian church.
