Samuel Irwin Harness, 92, of Middletown, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at the Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday at Olney United Methodist Church in Olney. The Rev. Mark Spence officiated and interment was in Olney Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

He was born Jan. 12, 1918 near Middletown to John Reuben Harness and Effie Eames Harness.

Survivors include 11 nephews and nieces, Eric Harness and wife, Penny of Montgomery City; Patty Harness Farney and husband, Randy of Rockford, Ill.; Randy Harness of Montgomery City; John Watkins and wife, Judy of Columbia; Bonnie Watkins Prather and husband, Phil of Columbia; Bob Watkins and wife, Peggy of Columbia; Dr. Gary Rucker and wife, Margie of Lake St. Louis; Zandra Rucker Sandford and husband, Graves of Moberly; Susan Rucker Craig and husband, Jim of Millersburg; Linda Poole Hansen and husband, Paul of Lake St. Louis; and Cecil W. Harness and wife, Lorraine of New Hartford; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous friends. Also some great companions of his were Richard, his dog, and Barney, his horse.

Mr. Harness was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Nellie Watkins, Sue Rucker, and Effie June Poole; and three brothers, John Harness, LeRoy Harness and Cecil Harness.

He graduated from Montgomery City High School and later graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia, with a degree in Agriculture, a great accomplishment for that era.
Mr. Harness farmed most of his life and was one of the greatest joys he had watching the crops grow and then harvest. He was born, raised and lived on the original farm most of his life.

He was a member of the Olney United Methodist Church. He was active in the Montgomery County Historical Society and the Middletown Community Center. Mr. Harness enjoyed traveling, but his greatest joy was being on the farm.

Casketbearers included Eric Harness, John Watkins, Cecil Harness, Randy Harness, Dr. Gary Rucker, Jim Craig and Graves Sandford.

Memorials contributions are suggested to the Montgomery County Historical Society or to the Middletown Community Center.
