Leonard B. Bloxton, 34, died September 25, 1932, at the Southwestern State Hospital, Marion, Smyth County, Virginia, of Tuberculosis of the Lungs, for which he had been treated by the attending physician since September 1, 1930.

According to his death certificate, "L. B. Bloxton" was single and had never been employed, indicating that he suffered from mental illness as well as T.B., which was a contagious problem for this mental hospital well before he was treated for it in 1930.

1930 Census (April 5, 1930), Leonard B. Bloxton, age 32, was an inmate at Southwestern State Hospital.

He was born in Roanoke, Virginia to Walter A. & Rosa Lee (Richardson) Bloxton.

In 1914, Leonard B. Bloxton was a Freshman, Class of 1917, Roanoke Valley Christian High School, when his sister, Amo Ethelyn (who married Richard Ellis), was a Senior. PHOTO OF LEONARD'S FRESHMAN CLASS in the 1914 "Roanoke Acorns" Yearbook.

On his WWI Registration, September 12, 1918, when he was age 20, he had suffered a "nervous breakdown" and was "under the care of Dr. Brown". He was tall, medium build, with brown eyes and hair. He lived with his mother, Rosa Bloxton, at 508 Roanoke Street, Roanoke, VA.

1920 Census (January 6, 1920), and in 1910, 508 Roanoke Street, Highland Ward, Roanoke City, VA -- VA X3 (ALL)

The Bloxton family is related to Patrick Henry. I was told today that the hereditary mental illness in this family is said to have been passed down by Patrick Henry's first wife, Sarah Shelton Patrick, who died at age 37 in 1775, but some blame her mental illness on her poor diet and more than six pregnancies.
