Era Stephenson was born Sept. 6, 1890, twin sisters with Vera Stephenson, in Bedford County. Their parents were Daniel Spencer and Thania Prudence (Stallings) Stephenson. She married William Arnie Sparkman with a license issued on Aug. 19, 1905, according Madison County, Ala., marriage records. The 1900 census shows Arnie working at a cotton mill and Era working as a housekeeper at a boarding house. They had two children: William Elmer, 3; and Homer, 11 months. Also in the Sparkmans' household was Era's sister Lula (Stephenson) Damron and her husband Will. Arnie Sparkman had been born Aug. 19, 1886 in Hazel Green, Ala., according to his World War I registration on June 5, 1917. The registration indicates he and Era had three children at that point. Arnie died just a few weeks later, June 26, 1917 and is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Ala., according to findagrave.com. The 1920 Census shows the widowed Era living in Madison County with Elizabeth, 12 (this appears to be a mistaken listing of son William); Homer, 10; and Edith, 3. Era's brother Clyde also was living with them. Both siblings were working on a farm. In 1930, Era lived in Madison County with sons William and Homer and daughter Edith, along with William's wife Eunice and Era's brother Clyde. Homer, William – listed as Elmer – Eunice and Clyde all worked at the cotton mill. I have not located Era in the 1940 Census. She died Dec. 5, 1978 in Madison County and is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, according to the state Death and Burials index and findagrave.com.
