Meets Sudden and Sad Death
George Buffy was instantly killed by No. 4, fast passenger train Saturday evening about 7 o'clock. In company with Pete Golie he was returning from the McCarter pasture a short distance south of town where they had taken some horses. The day's work was over and they conversed in happy tones as they leisurely sauntered back to town. Arriving at the railroad yard, which is double tracked, they never thought of the coming of No. 4 as it usually goes through about 2:20. Unfortunately there was a freight train standing in the yard, and in order to get to their destination, walking around the freight train was necessary.
Mr. Golie was in the lead and just got around the freight engine and across the main track when the fast traveling passenger dashed by him. Mr. Buffy, a few feet behind him, was overtaken in the center of the track. He was hurled a distance of 15 feet. Buffy has always been a trifle deaf and it is thought he was bewildered and didn't know if the standing engine made the steaming sound or not; therefore lingering to investigate before crossing the tracks.
George Buffy or "Big George" as he was commonly known was a man 54 years of age. He acquired the title of Big George because of his Herculean build and wonderful strength, and there were few men in this part of the west who could defeat him when it came to an athletic stunt or a real old rough battle.
A few weeks ago he went to Shelby to a recruiting station to enlist for army service, but defective teeth prohibited him, so he returned to Galata. Buffy was a patriot and believed in the principles our forefathers kept sacred.
"Big George" has no relatives in this part of the country, but leaves multitudes of friends who are plunged into sorrow over his death.
