Elmer was born one of five children who survived to adulthood to William and Alice Stone McDermitt. He was a direct descendant of Revolutionary War patriots, Frederick Miller and Elias Stone. Elmer and Opal Greer McDermittt met in Mason Co. West Virginia. They were married there on Dec. 28, 1921. Elmer & Opal had four children, two sons born in Mason Co. West Virginia and one son and daughter born in Franklin Co., Columbus, Ohio. All three of his sons served in the U.S. Military. In fact, Pop attempted to sign up for military service during WWII but was denied due to a heart issue.
He was affectionately known as "Pop" by his children and grandchildren. His eyes were attractively blue gray. It is remembered that his hands were very large and manly. A hard working man all his life who provided for his family as circumstances necessitated, his skills as a master carpenter were well respected. He custom built many homes around Columbus, Ohio that are a testament to his craftsmanship.
