William was the oldest child of Benjamin Franklin Attaway and wife Nancy Elizabeth Bickham. He is found in their household on the 1850 Kaufman County, Texas and 1860 Lafayette County, Arkansas census.

William enlisted in the Civil War at the same time as did Samuel Haney, his future brother in law. William was sent home due to the fact that he was underage. He briefly served with the Bright Star Rifles, a company formed from Bright Star, Arkansas.

My great-grandparents (Samuel & Laura Attaway Haney) and great-great-grandparents (Benjamin Franklin and Nancy Elizabeth Bickham Attaway) moved to Montgomery County about 1867. They remained there for at least ten years. During this time period several members of the families passed away.

In the later part of the 1970's I corresponded with a lady in Montgomery County who was assisting me in my search for cemeteries. I received a letter stating that a gentleman had contracted with a gravel company to sell gravel found on his property. During the excavation, a gravestone was discovered. The gentleman immediately had additional work halted. The gravestone that was discovered was for this person. When the lady sent me the name, dates of birth and death I knew that it was the son of Benjamin Franklin and Nancy Elizabeth Attaway. The birth of William W. Attaway was recorded in the bible of Nancy's father, William M. Bickham of Caddo Parish, Louisiana. The date of birth in the bible matched exactly with the birth date recorded on the stone.

I do not know what eventually happened to this gravestone. Perhaps it was left where it was found. I have no idea of what the proper name for this cemetery may have been. I have named it the Attaway/Haney Cemetery as children from both of these families would have been buried there. This may have been either a family or a community cemetery. It is my hope that someone will see this information and be able to properly identify the name of this long forgotton cemetery.
