ITHA M. THOMPSON, aged 87, died Tuesday, March 22, 1932, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Tyler in Mortonville, Indiana. Itha, the son of George Thompson and Caroline F. Butts Thompson, was born on February 10, 1845, in Springfield Township of LaGrange County, Indiana. He migrated to Delphi, Indiana around 1890.
Itha Thompson was a Civil War veteran and served in Union Company I, 77th Regiment, 4th Indiana Cavalry. Itha enlisted on March 7, 1864 in Delphi (Carroll County) Indiana and he mustered out of the cavalry on July 22, 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. His military pension for service in the Union army of the Civil War was granted on July 1, 1898. (He had been hospitalized at the Disabled Soldiers Home in Danville Soldiers home from May 11, to July 12, 1914 for the result of war injuries.)
He married Sarah Ellis in Carroll County, Indiana, on January 25, 1864. Sarah died on September 24, 1903. Known children of Itha and Sarah Thompson are: Charles Thompson, Stephen Thompson, Nettie Thompson Widner, John W. Thompson, Joseph Thompson, Andrew Thompson, and Jennie Thompson Tyler. (Itha is acknowledged in references to his son, John Thompson's military service in Company G of the United States Infantry with battles in Santiago.)
Itha worked on the once well-known Wabash-Erie Canal on a grain boat crew between Delphi, Lafayette and Louisville, Kentucky. (His granddaughter, Letha Thompson Isaacs was recognized on behalf of her grandfather at the Delphi Old Settlers Celebration on August 17, 1950, with a Centennial Certificate recognizing his contribution to the economic/political development of the Wabash-Erie Canal.
