He was born Bertus Buzeman in February 1899 in the country village of Oude Pekela, located in the eastern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of the 26 years old, unmarried Elizabeth Buzeman, who had no occupation. He was born at the home of his 55 years old grandfather and farmer Kornelis Buzeman, who declared Bertus' birth at the town hall. On 30 May 1912 Bertus was legitimized by the 35 years old farmer Jan Bos (= Forest), widower of Grietje Veling, at his marriage to Elizabeth Buzeman in Oude Pekela.

On 12 December 1919 farmer Jan Bos married in municipality Ambt Hardenberg, located in the Dutch eastern province Overijssel, at the age of 20 years the one year older Hilligje van der Hoek (= of the Corner), born at Avereest, municipality Ambt Hardenberg and daughter of farmer Roelof van der Hoek and Lammigje Perfors.

They had the following seven children Bos:
* Jan (John), 19 April 1920, Ommen, Overijssel;
* Lammigje (Lula), 30 April 1922, Avereest, Overijssel;
* Elizabeth (Liz), 27 June 1924, Avereest, Overijssel;
* Grietje (Grace), 4 August 1927, Neerlandia, Barrhead County, Alberta, Canada;
* Roelof (Ralph), 8 February 1932, Vega, Barrhead County, Alberta, County;
* Bertha Gerda (Betty), 26 July 1935, Vega, Barrhead County, Alberta, Canada
* William John (Bill), 28 November 1942, Barrhead, Barrhead County, Alberta, Canada.

Between June 1924 and August 1927 Bertus Bos, his wife Hilligje van der Hoek and their two first children emigrated to the agrarian hamlet Neerlandia, located in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Barrhead, between Mellowdale and Vega, approximately 20 kilometers north of Barrhead and northwest of Westlock. Neerlandia was founded by Dutch immigrants beginning in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well.

His wife Hilligje aka Hilda died in August 1945 at the age of 47 years, probably in or near Neerlandia. Widower Bertus Bos died in February 1980 at the age of 81 years in Barrhead, the seat of Barrhead County, Alberta, Canada.
