Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1964 to 1970), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. Born William John McCool, he attendedLawrenceburg High School in Indiana. He was signed by Cincinnati as an amateur free agent in 1963 and marked his Major League debut with the Reds on April 24, 1964. In mainly a reliever role, he recorded six wins with an impressive 2.42 ERA in 40 games-pitched. He was named to the 1964 Sporting News Rookie of the Year squad. In 1965, he yielded a career-high nine wins and the following year (1966), he achieved all-star status. In late 1968, McCool was selected by San Diego during the Expansion Draft and has the distinction of being on the Padres' inaugural year roster of 1969. In 292 regular season games, he compiled a 32 win, 42 loss record with a 3.59 lifetime ERA in 528 innings-pitched. In 1977, he authored a book titled "The Billy McCool Pitching Digest: A Guide to Effective Baseball Pitching".
