*CIVIL WAR VETERAN

Steven Goen's Death Certificate appears to give his birth date as Jan 2, 1835, although the final number could be a sloppily made 3. His headstone has Jan 2, 1833 for his birth. Since his stone, which is a double stone with his wife, contains no death date for him, it apparently was originally erected after his wife's death. That he is buried in Covert Cemetery is verified by his Death Certificate.

Stephen Goens was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted on 18 Oct 1864 in Company K of the 34th Regiment of the US Colored Troops at Washington DC and was discharged on 16 Oct 1865 at Charleston SC.
