He graduated from Hancock High School in Hancock, Mich., in 1947 and later joined the U.S. Air Force where he attained the rank of sergeant. He moved to Taft in 1952 following the Korean War and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was the owner/operator of Mitchell's Backhoe Service and was one of the first men to run a backhoe on the West Side. After retirement in 1980 he spent much of his time traveling in his car. Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Taft Elks Lodge #1527, the Taft Loyal Order of Moose #1431 and American Legion Fellows Post #63. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Albina Mitchell, and a brother, James Mitchell Jr. His survivors include his wife Reba Mitchell; three children Jerome Mitchell, Vickie Roberts, and Diane Capaldi; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Beiring, Marie Witanen and Clair Adams; and many nieces and nephews.
