W. C. Puffer Passes Away

Candidate for Council Succumbs After Brief Illness.

W. C. Puffer, of the fire and marine insurance firm of Puffer, Burgard & Co., died at the Good Samaritan Hospital at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased had been ill only a few days, but an attack of acute uric acid poising proved more than his strength could withstand. Mr. Puffer, who was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Councilman from the Fifth Ward, was out actively campaigning last Sunday and Monday and was not believed to be seriously ill, although at that time he complained of rheumatism. Thursday Drs. Sanford Whiting and George F. Wilson were called into consultation, and it was decided at that time that he was seriously ill, and in spite of all medical skill he died yesterday morning.

The deceased has long been in the insurance business in this city and was formerly in partnership in the firm of Puffer, Dooley & Co., and after dissolving his partnership he entered business with John H. Burgard & Co.

Mrs. Puffer, wife of the decease, left Portland five weeks ago in company with Mr. John A. Childs and Mrs. Riemann. She has been notified by a cable sent to Naples by her husband's partner, and it is probable that no arrangements form the funeral will be made until she is heard from.

The deceased was a prominent lodge member, being a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Columbia Lodge No. 114, A.F.&A.M. and of the Al Kader Temple. Edward Holman & Co., undertakers, have taken charge of the remains pending the funeral arrangements.
