He was a 1973 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and then attended Cameron University, Lawton, OK. David faithfully served his country in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant (E-6) in the Army Medical Corps with 20 years active duty retiring in 1987. In Hopkinsville, KY on August 8, 1975 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Zwick. After retiring from the U.S. Army he then worked for various poultry companies, including Mack Egg, Egg Innovation and Midwest Poultry. He was member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Pierceton, IN.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy Burkhart of Winona Lake, IN; children Chad William (Spouse Rose) Burkhart of Claypool, IN, Brian (spouse Karrie) Burkhart of Warsaw, IN, and Melissa Shepherd of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren Liberty Mae Burkhart and Samuel Dynamite Burkhart; parents Chad and Martha Avo Burkhart of Claypool, IN; brothers Larry (spouse Gail) Burkhart of Warsaw, IN and Wayne (spouse Gail) Burkhart of Columbia City, IN and sister Brenda (spouse Robert) Haywood of Claypool, IN. A daughter, Rachel Ann Burkhart and a brother Douglas Taylor Burkhart preceded him.
Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 9:00 AM Wednesday, June 11, 2014 in St. Francis Xavier Church, Pierceton, IN with Father Andrew Curry officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Claypool, IN with Military Honors rendered by American Legion Post #49, V.F.W. Post #1126 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.
