Mrs. Emily Babcock Gates of 29 Pine St., tax collector for the Town of North Dansville, died unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 2, 1981) in Noyes Memorial Hospital after being stricken at her home. She was 58.
Born in Dansville, she had resided in the community all her life. Mrs. Gates had recently announced her candidacy for a fifth term as tax collector. She was employed at the Dansville Branch of Western Regional Off Track Betting Corp.
Mrs. Gates was a member of the Dansville United Methodist Church, The Ladies Auxiliary of Post 6630, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Dansville and the Livingston County Women's Republican Club.
Surviving are a son, SFC David D. Gates of Vint Hill Farms, Warrington, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Eddy and Mrs. Alice Button of Dansville and Mrs. Doreen Yeoman of Rome, N.Y.; two brothers. Charles Babcock of New Port Richey, Fla., and Robert Babcock of Dansville; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Howe and Mrs. Carolyn Bondi of Dansville; 15 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A service was conducted Wednesday morning in the Hindle Funeral Home with the Rev. G. Calvin Sheasley officiating. Interment was in Greenmount Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dansville Ambulance Fund. (Genesee County Express, August 6, 1981, p4)
