Mary Ellen was the daughter of Henry Vane Bamberger and Sara 'Sadie' Ellen Bixler. She was named after her mother, and her grandmother Mary Ellen Kreider Bixler.
She was the mother of three sons, one of whom had two daughters after her death (one named Ellen after her).
Mary Ellen graduated with the Lebanon High School class of 1951. She received her degree from the Reading School of Nursing in 1954. She practiced as a registered nurse in Reading and Lebanon. Later, she volunteered as a life member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary.
Mary was a member of Tabor United Church of Christ where she served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for 20 years.
She and her husband were third cousins once removed through the Bamberger/Bomberger family (although they were unaware of any relationship). He later remarried.
